It’s MARCH, and what else would the Genealogy Blog Party be celebrating other than Women’s History Month?

What is Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month actually started out as a local celebration held in Santa Rosa, California designed to correspond with International Women’s Day on March 8. The movement spread across the country, and in February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of 8 March 1980 to be National Women’s History Week.

In March 1987, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, and the entire month of March became “Women’s History Month.” From 1988 to 1994, Congress continued to pass resolutions requesting that the President proclaim March as Women’s History Month, and each president since 1995 has done so.

The National Women’s History Alliance selects the annual Women’s History Month theme:

The theme for Women’s History Month in 2021 captures the spirit of these challenging times. Since many of the women’s suffrage centennial celebrations originally scheduled for 2020 were curtailed, the National Women’s History Alliance is extending the annual theme for 2021 to “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.“[note]See https://www.womenshistory.org/womens-history/womens-history-month for more information.[/note]
