Unless you’ve been completely cut off from the internet and/or the genealogy world for the past few months, you are well aware that the 1950 U.S. census was released on April 1st.
And if you’re like most family historians, you’ve been deeply immersed in 1950 census research ever since. Let’s hear about what you’ve found!
Back the 1950s
The 1950s was a decade marked by tremendous change. Babies were “booming” along with economic growth, technology, and consumer goods. Many families were moving to the suburbs and watching TV shows like I Love Lucy and The Twilight Zone. Rock ‘n Roll was sweeping the nation and teenagers were hanging out in malt shops and doing the Twist.
The 1950s were also the era of the Korean War, the Cold War, and Congressional hearings to root out “un-American activities” in the federal government, schools, and even in Hollywood. And with the launch of Sputnik, the race for space took off in earnest.
What do you remember about the 1950s? I wasn’t born yet, but I do remember my parents reminiscing about that time with fondness.
